LG Display Introduces Revolutionary Gaming OLED Panel
LG Display, a global leader in display technologies, has unveiled the world's first Gaming OLED panel with a switchable refresh rate and resolution. The company has initiated mass production of the 31.5-inch panel this month, marking its entry into the high-end gaming display market with innovative new products.
This groundbreaking Gaming OLED panel allows users to select between a high refresh rate (FHD 480 Hz) and a high-resolution mode (UHD 240 Hz) based on the content being viewed. In high refresh rate mode, users can enjoy fast-paced games like first-person shooters (FPS) or racing games. Switching to high-resolution mode provides an immersive experience for watching movies with rich visual effects or high-definition 4K content. Unlike traditional panels, this OLED panel offers flexibility in resolution when changing the refresh rate, enhancing its versatility for various applications.
Refresh rate refers to the number of images displayed per second, while resolution indicates the number of pixels on the screen. A higher refresh rate results in smoother images during fast transitions, while a higher resolution offers better video and image quality.
LG Display's innovative solution, Dynamic Frequency & Resolution (DFR), allows users to prioritize between refresh rate and resolution by adjusting the image processing speed. This technology is being introduced for the first time in LG Display's 31.5-inch Gaming OLED panel.
In addition to DFR, the Gaming OLED panel incorporates other LG Display technologies to enhance the user experience. META Technology 2.0, based on Micro Lens Array (MLA) innovation, maximizes light emission from organic materials to improve image quality. Thin Actuator Sound technology generates sound directly from the screen, eliminating the need for separate speakers and providing more immersive audio.
LG Display plans to supply the new 31.5-inch Gaming OLED panel to global gaming brands, starting with LG Electronics. The company is expanding its presence in the high-end gaming display market by introducing a full lineup of Gaming OLED panels in various sizes.
Unlike LCD panels that require backlighting, LG Display's Gaming OLED panels are self-emissive, allowing each pixel to produce perfect blacks and lifelike images. With an ultra-high refresh rate of 480 Hz and a response time of 0.03 ms, these panels offer the fastest performance in the market.
Furthermore, Gaming OLED panels emit less blue light and do not produce flicker, reducing the risk of eye fatigue during extended gaming sessions compared to LCD screens.
"We aim to deliver new customer value through OLED's unique technologies, including perfect blacks, fast response times, and ultra-high refresh rates, solidifying our position as a leader in the high-end gaming display market," said Won-seok Kang, Vice President and Head of the Large Display Product Planning Division at LG Display.
