MaxSun Unveils New MoDT Motherboards with Soldered Intel Raptor Lake CPUs
MaxSun has introduced two new Mobile on Desktop (MoDT) motherboards, the MS-MoDT 230H D4 WIFI and MS-MoDT 205H D4 WIFI, designed to bring the efficiency of mobile processors to compact desktop systems. Both models utilize the microATX form factor, measuring 190 x 180 mm, making them ideal for small form factor (SFF) builds, workstations, and edge computing applications.
Processor Specifications and Performance
Despite their names, the Core 7 230H and Core 5 205H processors featured on these boards are based on Intel’s Raptor Lake architecture, not the upcoming Arrow Lake series. The MS-MoDT 230H D4 WIFI is equipped with an Intel Core 7 230H processor, offering 10 cores (6 performance and 4 efficiency cores), 16 threads, a maximum boost clock of 5.2 GHz, 24 MB of cache, and a base TDP of 45 W that can scale up to 115 W under turbo conditions. This model also includes a dedicated VRM heatsink and four rear USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports for enhanced connectivity and cooling.
The MS-MoDT 205H D4 WIFI features the Intel Core 5 205H CPU, which provides 8 cores (4 performance and 4 efficiency cores), 12 threads, up to 4.8 GHz boost, 12 MB cache, and the same 45 W base and 115 W turbo TDP. It’s important to note that neither processor has integrated graphics enabled, so a discrete GPU is required for display output.
Shared Features and Connectivity
Both motherboards share a robust set of features tailored for modern desktop needs. Each board includes two DDR4 DIMM slots supporting up to 64 GB of DDR4-3200 memory, two PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots compatible with 2242 and 2280 SSDs, and two SATA 3.0 ports for additional storage. Networking is handled by Realtek Gigabit Ethernet, while wireless connectivity is provided by Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3 support.
MoDT Market Landscape and Value Proposition
The MoDT concept, which integrates mobile CPUs directly onto desktop motherboards, is gaining traction among enthusiasts and professionals seeking efficient, compact systems. Other recent entries in this segment include the Minisforum BD895i SE ITX, powered by AMD’s Ryzen 9 8945HX, and Erying’s microATX boards featuring Intel Core Ultra 200H processors. MoDT motherboards often offer a cost advantage compared to purchasing a separate CPU and motherboard, making them an attractive option for budget-conscious builders.
While MaxSun has not yet announced official pricing or availability for the MS-MoDT 230H D4 WIFI and MS-MoDT 205H D4 WIFI, industry estimates suggest a price range between $110 and $200. These new boards are poised to provide a compelling solution for users looking to build efficient, space-saving desktop systems with the latest Intel mobile processors.
